Child allowances and tax deductions

Topic

The state supports families with children. The most important help is family allowances. Employees and self-employed people are entitled to them, for each child. Parents who are not in paid work can also receive them. The money comes via the employer or the family compensation fund. You receive it every month together with your wages.

There are two types: the child allowance is paid up to the age of 16. In the canton of Zurich it is 215 francs per month, and 268 francs from the age of 12. The education allowance is paid for young people in education or training, from 15 up to a maximum of 25. It is 268 francs per month (as of 2026).

Families also get relief through taxes. For each child, you may deduct an amount from your income. You can also deduct childcare costs. That way families pay less tax. People on a low income can also get a reduction in their health insurance premiums. However, there are no free train journeys or cheaper food for families.
